Support innovative projects and start-ups Rotterdam sees a specific role in supporting innovative projects and start-ups, such as HYGROs mobility branch Mobihy. The support of Rotterdam Municipality gives Mobihy the opportunity to further develop itself as a specialist in hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles and to put hydrogen-powered vehicles into practice.
H2X Warrego hydrogen pick-up truck from Mobihy Soon, foresters from the municipality will be driving around in a Warrego pick-up truck from H2X. Mobihy is the Benelux representative of this international brand. The commercial vehicle has zero CO2 emissions and a range of more than 400 kilometers. The off-road capability is comparable to diesel-powered vehicles, only the Warrego is a lot quieter during operation.
Douke Visserman, Business Developer Hydrogen Applications at Mobihy: "It's great to see that Rotterdam sees a future in hydrogen as an energy carrier in transport. Hydrogen-powered vehicles are particularly well suited for commercial vehicles and the transport sector. With commercial vehicles like the H2X Warrego, customers can count on a zero emission vehicle with high deployability due to the large energy storage in the vehicle and fast refueling, similar to gasoline or diesel."
Chris Reitz, co-founder and Chief Design Officer at H2X Global: "At H2X, we are actively developing a range of logistics vehicles, including the Warrego Pick-up, to establish a Proof of Concept ecosystem. This ecosystem serves a dual purpose: to familiarize customers with operating hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen refueling infrastructure, and to enable companies like H2X and others in the hydrogen value chain to implement maintenance and after-sales services that make this ecosystem sustainable over the long term and a viable alternative to fossil fuels.
We are pleased to announce that these vehicles will be deployed to several local governments throughout the Netherlands, including the city of Rotterdam. These local governments are playing a crucial role as early adopters of this technology and, together with our Dutch partners HYGRO, are supporting our pioneering efforts to decarbonize the commercial transportation sector."
Smart Energy Systems program The investment in this pickup truck is a spin-off of the city's efforts with the 'Smart Energy Systems' program. With this program, Rotterdam aims to accelerate private innovation in the field of energy transition. One of the innovations is HYGRO's hydrogen wind turbine and 'wind to wheel' concept.
Rotterdam as Hydrogen Hub for Europe Rotterdam is European Hydrogen Hub. The city is putting this into practice with the purchase of this first hydrogen pickup truck from H2X. By deploying this commercial truck, experience and knowledge can be accumulated on the use of hydrogen vehicles within the municipality. The use of hydrogen in the pickup truck also allows for the development of hydrogen production capacity and infrastructure. The city will use these lessons to determine next steps toward a fully climate-neutral fleet.

Hydrogen-powered H2X Warrego pick-up truck in partnership with Mobihy for Rotterdam municipality

With the purchase of the first hydrogen-powered pickup truck, the Municipality of Rotterdam is taking a step towards making its vehicle fleet more sustainable. Tduring the World Hydrogen Summit on May 10, Robert Simons received the keys to the hydrogen-powered H2X pickup truck from Chris Reitz of H2X Global and Nitin Biharie of Mobihy.
This truck will be used in the Kralingse Bos to support foresters in their activities. The municipality of Rotterdam takes its responsibility in working towards climate goals. Part of this is making vehicles more sustainable; all city vehicles must be zero emission by 2030. The municipality considers it appropriate that the city's forest rangers receive a zero-emission vehicle, since they care for the city's wildlife.
Alderman Robert Simons (Port & Economy): "Rotterdam is working to become Europe's Hydrogen Hub. With the purchase of this first hydrogen pick-up, the city is putting this into practice. The support of the Municipality of Rotterdam leads to further development of technology and business cases. Which ultimately leads to healthy activity and employment for the city. Our foresters take care of nature in our city, so we are happy that they can drive sustainably while doing their job. And of course it is important that our citizens breathe the cleanest air possible when they take a walk in the parks."
